DESCRIPTION

Anthony DeMello, a Roman Catholic of the Jesuit Order, was a prolific writer of stories, meditations, spiritual exercises and parables. Born in Bombay, India, he presented "Christian exercises in Eastern form" in an attempt to bridge the gap between east and west. His emphasis on living in the presence of God in the present moment was the centerpiece of the many retreats he held over the course of his lifetime.

DeMello's critique of the capacity of "religion" to interfere with our relationship with God has drawn criticism from various quarters, including the Vatican. In the penetrating introduction by fellow Jesuit William Dych and in his selection of deMello's essential writings, readers may assess for themselves the message of a true spiritual master for our times.
