DESCRIPTION
On Easter Sunday in 1939, before an audience of 75,000, a slender African-American woman stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and opened her mouth in song. In that moment, Marian Anderson did more than captivate her listeners. With the dignity and grace that were her hallmark, the renowned contralto made a gentle but powerful statement against racial injustice that lifted her beyond critical acclaim to international influence.
Marian Anderson: A Song of Dignity and Grace tells how one woman with a beautiful voice used her tremendous gift to oppose racism and spread hope across the world. This stirring, 2-part Day of Discovery DVD takes you from the stage of the Metropolitan Opera to the banks of the Jordan River, and through the Great Depression, World War II, and the Civil Rights Era.
Your entire family will love this moving, true story. You’ll fall in love with Marian’s humble spirit. You’ll marvel at her singing. And you’ll be inspired by her faith in God. Thanks to Marian’s remarkable talent, her life became a life of firsts, not only for herself but also for all people of color. In the words of educator John Cherry, “What she did quietly spoke loudly for others later.”
