TRACT TEXT
What would you do if the world was invaded by an overwhelming alien power and there seemed to be nothing you could do to save yourself?
This is the premise that drives Steven Spielberg’s major blockbuster film War of the Worlds starring Tom Cruise. The movie is an update of a story based on H. G. Wells’ legendary novel written in—believe it or not—1898! He was a man ahead of his time, and is justly thought of as the greatest sci-fi writer of all time.
The current film version is not the first time this story has been retold. On Halloween night October 30, 1938, CBS radio broadcast Orson Wells’ dramatization of War of the Worlds, and the reaction was incredible. Many listeners took it to be real and became frantic. Thousands of families fled their homes resulting in jammed highways. Many folks phoned loved ones with farewells. There were cases of
heart attacks, miscarriages, and suicidal attempts. The New Jersey National Guard was called out. The phones at CBS radio were jammed.
War of the Worlds addresses some very real fears that many of us have, especially since the unexpected terrorism attack of 9/11.
Here is how H. G. Wells writes of this fear in his opening chapter: “No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man’s....”
The Bible has much to say about intelligent, unseen forces whose purpose is to bring destruction. The Scriptures speak of these spiritual forces as demonic and under the control of Satan. Jesus put it this way: Satan’s “purpose is to steal and kill and destroy”—just as the alien forces attempt to do in War of the Worlds. But Jesus goes on to say, “My purpose is to give life in all its fullness” (John 10:10).
The Bible teaches that Jesus came to give “you authority over all the power of the enemy” (Luke 10:19), so that you can experience abundant life—rather than destruction and death. The Bible puts it this way: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
HERE IS HOW TO RECEIVE A VICTORIOUS LIFE FROM GOD:
1. Recognize that you have done things you should not have done.
“For all have sinned; all fall short of God’s glorious standard”—Romans 3:23.
2. Your sinful ways have separated you from God—
the source of victorious life.
“But there is a problem—your sins have cut you off from God”—Isaiah 59:2
3. You must turn from the path of destruction and look to the One who conquered death.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord”—Romans 6:23. Jesus conquered Satan and death by dying on the cross and rising to life again.
4. God offers you this victorious life through Jesus Christ.
“But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God”—John 1:12.
5. Trust Jesus now as your Savior and Lord.
To welcome Jesus into your life, simply say a prayer like this:
Dear Jesus, thank You for loving me enough to die on the cross for my sins. I confess that I have sinned. I am sorry. Please forgive me. Come into my life as my Savior and my Leader.
I promise to follow You and tell others about You. Amen.
