What is your favorite ride at the water park? Is it speeding down the giant slide? Or maybe twisting and turning through those towering tubes? Maybe it’s getting knocked around in the big wave pool that you like most. For some people, just floating down the lazy river in a tube is what they like best. Whatever your favorite ride is at the water park…one thing is certain. None of it would work at all, if it weren’t for the water.
Water is everywhere on this earth...in fact it takes up more space on our planet than the land. Our bodies are made mostly of water. We need water to live. It is because water is so important that Jesus used it in the Bible to teach a number of important lessons. Let’s take a look at some...because they still apply to us today.
On a Lake ...He Caught Fish.
“…They caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.” (v. 6)
Jesus helped His friends catch a huge bunch of fish to show them that they would be “fishing for men” someday. This means telling people about Jesus and helping them to become Christians.
At Sea...He Calmed a Storm.
“He replied, ‘You of little faith, why are you so afraid?’ Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.” (v. 26)
Jesus did this to show His power over nature. Jesus did this so His friends would learn to trust Him no matter what.
On the Water...He Took a Walk.
“During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.” (v. 25)
With a Bowl...He Washed Feet.
“ After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.” (v. 5)
Jesus did this to show His friends just how much He loved them. He set an example for them of how to serve one another.
At a Well in the Desert...He Gave Life.
“ Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (v. 14)
Jesus explained that He is the source of all life, and that by trusting Him we will receive His life forever.
Jesus is offering you:
Step 1: Admit that you are a sinner. Most everyone in the world today agrees that no one is perfect and that we all do things wrong at one time or another. Romans 3:23 says, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Step 2: Know there is a penalty for sin. There has to be a penalty for our sins. Most people eventually get caught for their wrong doing and suffer the consequences. In the same way, God will not allow us to get away without punishment for our sins. He is a holy God and “in him there is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). The penalty for sin is eternal separation from God. Romans 6:23 says, “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Step 3: Believe that Jesus offers forgiveness of your sins. But there’s good news too! 1 John 1:9 says,
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
God does not want anyone to be eternally separated from Him, so He sent His Son, Jesus, to die on a cross, in our place, for our sins. John 3:16 says “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
Step 4: Trust Christ and ask Him to save you.
Romans 10:9–10 says “If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.”
You can ask Jesus to save you with a prayer like this:
Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and I am sorry for all the things that I have done that displease You. I ask You to forgive me of my sins and to wash me with Your water of life. I believe that Jesus died to pay for my sins and rose again to give me new life. Dear God, come into my life, save me, and give me everlasting life. I want to give You my best from this day forward. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
