The 23rd Psalm

Psalm 23 (NIV)

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for you are with me;
your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

The 23rd Psalm is a beautiful poem describing God’s love and care for His people. Like a faithful shepherd who cares for his sheep, God guides those who love Him into peace and rest.

The Good Shepherd leads us when we’re lost, heals us when we’re broken, protects us when we’re in danger. But most of all, the Shepherd wants to know us…and for us to know Him. This can be done only through the One He sent to return us to the fold, His Son Jesus Christ.

The Bible tells us that we all stray from God’s perfect will and we need a Savior to bring us back. Otherwise the penalty for our wanderings is eternal death, like a sheep separated from our life-saving Shepherd.

When Jesus died on the cross and rose again, He paid the debt we owed God for our sin. If you want God to be your Shepherd, you can tell Him in a prayer. When you admit you’re “lost,” and you trust in Christ’s sacrifice on your behalf, you are brought “into the fold” for all eternity.
